Printing Batch 1 PLA

Updated: Oct 11, 2023

Hey All,

By now most or all orders should have been shipped. And many of you have been recieving them. It is just PLA so there should not be any issue but here is a general set of guidlines and potential gotchas that might come up.

Print Settings

  • PLA

  • 60-70 degree bed

  • 210-225 Degree hotend.

  • Fan on 100% at 1mm

The astute amoung you will have notices that the temps are higher than most PLA. That is true. Most PLA prints at 180-220. That is also true for this, sort off. We did not use standard PLA which is often 4043. We printed with a PLA called 850. This is a high heat PLA that is much stronger. It was actually designed to be a partial alternative to ABS. We use this material for its higher clarity and it is what we use in our print farms.

Depending on your machine most generic PLA settings will be fine. But if you are running into issues like jamming on PTFE throat machines we would reccomend upping the heat a bit. (Because often the sensor data for the hotend is also not the true hotend temp, but that is another conversation)

Other than that use regular retraction settings and print on standard build plates from Glass to Buildtac

Below is the technical datasheet for the High Heat Ingeo 850 PLA for this batch.

had this batch jam up twice at extruder with recommended settings and slowed down a bit glad im not the only one dealing with this

Once I turned up the heat and reduced retraction I didn’t have any further issues. Its just a theory, but I think the default .8 retraction was allowing it to form a ball at the opening to my heat break. Once you get it dialed in it’s an awesome material. I’m hoping I can buy some more soon, I’m down to my last spool.

Have you guys cons the option of shipping just the filament without a spool? could help shave off a couple of cents and given that most people purchasing the filament likely already have tons of empty spools seems like it wouldn’t be an inconvenience either

I really like this filament. It has solid mechanical properties and prints with some pretty astonishing precision. The clear filament is the only one I have tested so far, but yields great dimensional accuracy and when tuned correctly, minimal warping. It is a bit finicky to get it laying perfectly flat on some prints, but with a bit of experimentation parts are coming out really well.

Layer adhesion seems strong even with high cooling. I havent been able to scientifically measure this, but just going off the feel of some large parts.

I am printing on a cheap but well tuned SVO7 Plus with an enclosure after drying the filament at 60*C for 24 hours. Printing at 250mm/s at 250*C,…

Edit: after some trial and error i have it printing at 245, with a retraction of 0.4mm.

This is the only filament I’ve ever had jam. I’m printing at 235C on an Ender 3 S1 Plus with an upgraded all metal hot end and a .6 tool steel nozzle. Im going to try cranking the heat up a little more, maybe the tool steel is having a hard time maintaining the temperature at the nozzle.

Let me start off saying, I have not used your product yet.

With spools of material I got an issue, maybe Tangled will address it with their product?

Ive only ever used Matterhackers. As a spool runs out, it would be nice if the filament would detach from the spool. The problem I have is that the printer will detect when the spool is out and pause printing. Only if it actually comes off the spool. Otherwise the printer grinds away at the filament and the print continues to completion without applying filament.

Matterhackers pushes the filament through a tiny hole and bends it 90°. Locking it to the spool. It does not unbend/release/break and clear the sensor that tells…

The Tangled Spools are designed to come off the spool when they run out.
